Portal

Ray has had some personal problems lately, and his review of Half Life 2 will be posted at his convenience.

Today Ash continues to fight with his popping mic as he reviews Portal. Suddenly the Orange Box theme planned for this week becomes much more apparent

What's this? A video game review on the internet that praises Portal! NO WAY!

Seriously though, I wonder at your mentions of 'the fully-clothed female protagonist' and the clean, mostly-white environments. Can you really say that Portal is a better game because so many other games portray women as objects? And for that matter, if so many other FPSs weren't so dark and brown, might Portal's environments seem not only intentionally sterile, but bland as well?
It's a fair review on the whole, though. I just wonder if Portal 2 will ever be called less than a failure, considering how much it has to live up to.

(and to what extent is Portal really an FPS?)

Notice how I never called it an FPS.

But yea, if we didnt confine ourselves to a timeframe, I would have elaborated on the colour issues and the objectification of characters. But it would just lead to the conclusion that you can make a good game without being shit-brown or grey, or without bikinis or breast emphasis.

I'm curious for Mirror's Edge for similar reasons. While the gameplay is going to be different they still star female protagonists in sterile environments essentially trying to clear a path of obstacles. We'll see how fresh it feels detatched from GLaDOS.
